IDIOM OF THE WEEK

quick off the mark

Meaning:

If you are quick off the mark, you are quick to react to an event or an opportunity.

For example:

Steven was quick off the mark when the internet started. He had his first website up and running before most people had even tried email.

Bobby is always quick off the mark when a girl comes into the bar. He’s offering her a drink before most of us have even noticed her.

Note:

1. From athletics, in which runners are “on their marks” before a race begins, and those who react quickest to the starter’s gun are “quick off the mark”.

2. “Slow off the mark” is an idiom which has the opposite meaning to “quick off the mark”.

Recent stories about American presidential candidates have raised questions about how much candidates should say about their medical history while running for office.  In the United States, no law requires presidential candidates or presidents to release medical records or information about their health to the public. But one recent study of likely voters found that 86 percent of those questioned said a candidate’s health is important to their vote.

Thailand Is ‘Hot’ Over American Sriracha Sauce

An Asian chili sauce is winning over taste buds all over the United States.

Sriracha sauce now flavors many American-made products — from popcorn to candy to beer. There are cookbooks explaining how to use the popular hot sauce.You can buy clothing decorated with the famous Sriracha rooster. Songs have been written about this hot sauce.

There is even a 2013 it documentary film, Sriracha, about the history of the spicy condiment.
